5 Fashion Classics You Should NEVER Part With
The new year is the perfect time to revisit our closet and take note of the pieces we already have in there. Throughout the month of January, take a few minutes each week to ask ourselves if the items within our wardrobe are actually serving us or not. If you’re not absolutely in love with a specific article of clothing, it might be a good time to donate, gift or sell. Just be careful not to toss any solid, high-quality basics. You know, the pieces you may not be too excited about, but the ones that bring an entire outfit together. To help you avoid any new year regrets, let’s go over some classic pieces you should always have in your collection.
Let’s start with my fave piece, the blazer. This item is having a major moment in fashion right now, thanks to the endless possibilities on how you can style it. What once was best suited for the office, is now making its way to the streets. From a basic tee, sneakers and jeans, to a form fitting bodysuit and vegan leather pants, the blazer has quickly become a wardrobe staple. It’s a piece you’ll be able to pull out, years down the road, and still have it in style. Although we’ve retired those short, form-fitting ones from the early 2000’s, to a more oversized, almost “stole from your boyfriend” silhouettes, that’s doesn’t mean those shapes and styles won’t return again. Never toss your blazers, unless damaged or worn.
Another item that will never go out of style and you should never part with is your denim. Obviously, if you listen to Gen Z, skinny jeans are “out”, but fashion is all about what you love, so you should always style pieces that make you happy. The trend in denim right now, is almost like the blazers, slightly oversized, looser, more relaxed fit, but that doesn’t mean the other shapes and sizes are gone forever. We know that fashion gets recycled, and everything comes back around, and since jeans never really go out of style or lose their shape, it’s something worth holding onto.
Sneaker trends are always evolving, it seems like every other month there’s a new style we’re crushing on. Some seasons it’s all about the classic white, then we have a moment where it’s all about bold and obnoxious colours, either way, sneakers are always going to be in style. A good sneaker can easily help you create and style some really chic and playful looks. Like mentioned above, everything comes back around, so while chunky, oversized kicks may be in style for a hot minute, eventually the shape and style you adore will be back in season soon. Depending on the brand, cut and colour, sneakers really don’t date, in fact, the older they are, the more retro they become, which is always in fashion.
This goes without saying, but never toss your classic button-down shirt. Again, this is another piece in your closet that may not be too exciting on its own, but something we all need. It seems that anything oversized and baggy is on trend right now, but that doesn’t mean you have to part with your fave form-fitting blouses; those will eventually be back in style and are also perfect for layering. A classic button-down can be styled so many ways and because they don’t date, it’s an item you need in your collection.
Finally, one I’ve been guilty of on numerous occasions, dresses. Regardless of what’s happening in terms of trends or fashion, we all have those classic dresses that just make us feel good about ourselves. The ones that are easy to style and hug our bodies in all the right places. We style them so often that we tend to get bored of them quickly, which leaves us to let them go easily. Never toss a dress that you adore and style on the daily. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy or trendy, but if you love it, hold onto it.
