Little White Dress
Whether you play by the rule of “no white after Labor Day” or live on the edge and wear it straight into the fall, white dresses are classic and timeless. I honestly believe that rule is a thing of the past. I know where the “so call rule” came from and how it was based around the labor movement, but I’ve always thought it to be somewhat silly. It was common for the wealthy to spend their summers abroad and lighted coloured clothing would help combat the heat. It was also a way for them to distinguish them from the “average” worker, who couldn’t afford such expensive clothing. When they returned at the end of the summer, they would put away their white linens, and save it for more “appropriate” weather, such as spring and summer. This is how this silly “rule” came about.
To me, the little white dress is a year-round staple. A romantic, airy and dreamy white dress is easily just as important in fall as it is in summer. It can easily take you from day to night, work to play. Women everywhere are pushing aside their little black dresses and embracing the chicness and freedom that comes from a LWD. White is a blank canvas, don’t be afraid to have fun with it. Play with textures, prints and colours. You can make it whatever you want it to be. You can style it up sweet and girly, or make it more edgy and chic with darker hues. Whether you’re a fashion-forward fashionista or slightly more conservative, a LWD is a must in your collection this fall.
