How to Wear Sequins Year Round
Now that Halloween is over, the holidays are officially on everyone’s minds. I know people have already decorated their homes, and as excited as I am, I still wait until after Remembrance Day. Just because our homes aren’t dripping in holiday cheer, doesn’t mean we can’t have fun with our outfits. Although sparkles, sequins and shine are usually saved for December, I’m here to say you can rock it all year round. Nothing screams fun like a little shimmer.
I know head-to-toe sequin, like this sequin dress, might be a little too “extra” for daytime, it sure is fun. If you find a dress too bold and daring, trying playing with sequin pants or skirts. You can achieve the same effect, while keeping it chic and sophisticated. Since the sequin is adding the sparkle, keep the rest of the wardrobe simple. Think adding in some texture with a cashmere sweater or maybe even some edge with a faux leather jacket. Both help to balance the femininity of the sequins with more “wearable” materials.
Since the sequin is making the statement, keep the rest of your accessories streamlined and understated. Let the sequin be the focal point, it will be hard for the eye to focus on anything else. This is perfect for those that don’t like to fuss with a lot of jewelry. If you are going to have fun with accessories, keep it minimal. Let the rest of the outfit do the talking. You never want to look like you’re playing dress-up or in a costume.
If you really want to achieve that chic and trendy streetwear look, pair your sequin with casual, almost “sporty” pieces. This is perfect when you’re transition from fall to holiday looks. The secret to not looking like an 80s disco ball, is play with dressy and causal items. For a relaxed weekend look, toss on a basic tee with your sequin skirt, or even an overside hoodie with your sequin pants. Keep it even more relaxed with classic white kicks and a crossover bag.
