5 Ways To Style A Silk Slip Dress
If there’s one throwback trend that I’m obsessed with, it’s the return of the slip dress. This lingerie inspired look was huge in the 90’s and is making a huge comeback. How could we forget Carrie Bradshaw’s infamous “naked dress” in Sex and the City, Cher’s sexy red number in Clueless, and of course, Kate Moss was no stranger to the trend. This sleepwear craze of the 90’s was usually styled on its own, but in 2020, it’s all about layering. For a basic white tee, to chunky sweaters and moto jackets, it’s all about adding additional pieces to truly make it your own.
Like I mentioned above, it’s all about the layers. For the slightly cooler months, try pairing it with a turtleneck. This will help eliminate the need of a scarf, while elongating the body. The higher neckline will force the eyes up towards your beautiful face, while its form-fitting design will draw attention to the natural curves of your body. You can add even more visual interest up around the neck with a statement necklace. Keep the rest of the look casual with converse or white kicks.
Don’t be afraid to pile on the layers, even if it’s overtop of the dress. A chunky knit sweater, or even a cardigan can add a real sense of luxury and coziness to an otherwise dainty and delicate outfit. You can drape it off one shoulder for a little edge, or even belt it around the waist to show-off your hourglass figure. Since the majority of the pieces are oversized and lose flowing, I’d play with your accessories and opt for some heel height in an ankle bootie or pumps.
Although this is a little more difficult to pull-off, dresses with pants are huge right now. There’s something effortlessly chic about wearing a silky dress with straight-legged jeans. Remember, it’s still all about the layers, so in order to achieve this “street-style” look, you’re going to need to pair it with a basic tee or even turtleneck. Don’t be afraid to play with your accessories, a cool animal print clutch and booties will do the trick.
For that ultra-feminine and glam approach, style it with your favourite blazer. A classic black, navy or grey blazer will take this otherwise playful and somewhat sexy dress and make it office and daytime appropriate. Of course, pairing it with a menswear or even oversized blazer will give it a trendier vibe, perfect for the weekend.
Finally, topping it with a leather jacket will add some real edge to the dress. Obviously, the slip dress is meant to be worn out on the town, so play up its sexiness with a chic moto jacket. You can place it overtop of your shoulder, with your bare arms showing, and some strappy open-toe heels to make it even dressier. Don’t forget some dainty jewelry and even a clutch to help elevate the look.
