Reasons To Consider Getting A Photography Studio
Calling all photographers, in this blog post, we’re talking about why you may want to consider getting a photography studio if you’re looking to take your career to the next level. Although I’m not a professional photographer, I do shoot photos and video content on the daily. After blogging and shooting content outside in the heat and cold for over a decade, it was time to invest in something more climate controlled. I’m not going to lie, investing in a studio space was scary at first. Obviously, it came with an extra cost, as shooting outside is free, but there are some real benefits to shooting inside and having your own personal space. If you have the chance, I suggest renting a studio space for a day or two, before committing to something long-term though.
After a year of shooting inside, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to go back to shooting outdoors. I’m officially spoiled, and my photos look 10 times better. This leads me to my first reason in considering getting a photography studio, fully controlled environment. I can’t tell you how many times I had my outfits ready, drove to the perfect location, only to be wind, rain or snowed out. The biggest benefit of having my own studio with The Focal Point Group, outside of having my own private bathroom and elevator, is having total control over the temperature. I also have full control over lighting. The harsh sunlight plays a huge factor in capturing those perfect images. Too harsh lighting can totally ruin a photo. In a studio, I can adjust the curtains, blinds or even bring in studio lights to create a soft-box effect, never worrying about direct sunlight or too many clouds.
Second reason to look into a photography space is to have experienced help. I know it can be intimidating at first, I know I was super nervous, but if inquiring at a reputable building, the studio owners are there to help. The team at The Focal Point group were there to listen to my wants and needs. They took the time to fully understand what I was looking for in a space and helped bring my new studio to life. They were so accommodating, and still are, 12 months later. Anytime I need something, may that be a chair from the lobby, a trolly to bring up some props, or touch-up paint for the floor, I know they are only a phone call away. The entire team is there to answer any questions I may have and offer guidance if I need it.
On top of having full control over my backgrounds, I no longer have to travel great distances to get from location to location. I can simply tear down and build up a new set design right on site. I can add whatever props I want, knowing the wind won’t blow them away, or the rain won’t damage them. I know different locations can give you different looks, well so can shooting in a studio. This does not mean I only have to shoot on white walls, or colourful seamless paper, I can get as creative as I like. I can add in sofas, chairs, tables, bookcases, desks, and even claw foot tubs and lockers if I want. I love playing with different wallpaper designs, as it really changes the look of a set, something I would never be able to do outside. The possibilities are endless, I can create all sorts of images, styles and backgrounds as I like.
Finally, creating a sense of routine. I’m a planner, so when I’m in the mood to shoot and get creative, I don’t want anything holding me back. This kinda plays into the first reason why having a studio is ideal, but I know I will always have a comfortable and relaying location to shoot at now. I can stay focused on producing quality work without any outside distractions. The Focal Point Building is super secure, locked at night, so even if I’m working late, I know there will be no distractions. I also have a pretty semi-private bathroom (which I share with other talents on my floor), I was able to bring in a fridge, coffee maker, all my snacks and the building even has a little lunchroom with microwave if I want to bring a lunch. Its temperature controlled, so I don’t have to deal with hot humid days in the summer, or bitter cold windy days in the winter. These are just a few of the reasons why a photo studio offers me a certain number of amenities that I just can’t achieve outdoors.
