5 Things in Your Closet You Need to Trash
It’s no secret that we tend to hold onto certain items for way too long. Maybe it has a sentimental memory attached to it, it brings back a happy moment, it was a gift from a loved one, it was expensive, for whatever reason, it’s sometimes hard to let go of things. We also tend to purchase the same items over and over again, leaving us with an excess amount of the same pieces. Then there are just those items that are out of date/ style or are extremely old and worn. Today, we are chatting about 5 things in your closet that you need to trash (or donate if still in good condition) this week!
Let’s start with basics. We all need them, but how many basic white tees does one person need? I highly suggest taking a few minutes and evaluating your t-shirt drawer. Look for ones that are ill fitting, super old, have stains, rips or even holes on them. Although we do need to have an array of tees, tanks and camis, we don’t need more than a handful in each colour. Pick your favourites, the ones you gravitate towards the most and toss the rest. Since these are the pieces that are often on heavy rotation, we want them to look and fit the best.
Keeping with the basic theme, although we all love a good collection of graphic and statement t-shirts, we don’t need dozens of them. How many “promotional” tees do you have, you know, the ones that you get for “free” that you never actually wear. How many band tees do you have from your teens, that you’re holding on for sentimental reasons that you haven’t had on in over a decade. I know printed tees are extremely popular, but I guarantee, you’re reaching for the same ones over and over again.
Although this isn’t something we necessarily wear on the daily (unless you’re lucky enough to live in a tropical location), bathing suits are another item of “clothing” that quickly accumulates over the years. Maybe it’s because the majority of us struggle to find that perfect one that fits like a glove, or maybe we’re always on the hunt for one that leaves us feeling incredibly sexy and confident, either way, we probably have a handful that we know we are never going to put on.
I think it’s safe to say, we all have that drawer where intimates go to die. Did you know we’re “supposed” to replace our underwear every 6 months…wild, I know? Time to toss those “embarrassing undies” that you wouldn’t want to be caught dead in, those “period” panties that have probably seen better days, and maybe those silky, lacey G-strings, that although are incredibly sexy, you just know are too uncomfortable to actually wear all day. We need to stop holding onto ones that are too tight, too itchy, too worn and faded, or ones that are just straight up too uncomfortable.
Lastly, let’s talk about jewellery and accessories. It’s one of those items that you always find on endcaps and near the checkout, as stores know it’s the perfect add-on and a quick impulse purchase. When cleaning out our closet, this is one area that’s often overlooked, therefore we quickly end up with a ton of it. Because most costume jewellery is so cheap and inexpensive, we don’t really think about it, we just purchase. Take a quick inventory of the items that you truly love and wear on the regular, and let go of the pieces that are tarnished, look super cheap, are out of style or are even broken. The items that are pushed near the back are probably items you have forgotten about anyways and will never reach for again.
